The Start of a New Year and a New Class

Ready for a productive, busy nine weeks of academic and professional growth.

Here we are at the beginning of a new semester, and as always it is a fresh start and a new opportunity to learn and grow both as a professional and human being.

So let's address a few basic questions: What are some of your personal or professional goals in EDUC 515 this semester. What would you like to be able to accomplish at the end of this class that you could not do at the beginning? What technologies might you be able to utilize to "teach digitally"? As technology continues to change profoundly how we live and work, what might be the implications for education? Or to be more specific, the implications for teachers? Students? What do you think?

Take a few minutes here as we begin to gather your thoughts and to brainstorm on a plan for progress in this class. Your final posted blogsite entry should be at least three of four paragraphs.

A "thumbs up" on the first day of class!

My Goals are to learn as much as I can in this class. I have already taken two classes prior to this one and besides this class I'm also taking 522. I'm familiar with some of the programs we will be using but I know I have lots to learn.

I believe technology will enhnace my lessons and i ill try to incorporate any available technology in my classroom. I feel that I will be very well prepared once I have my classroom with technology strategies and many other tool to enhance learning and provide my students with many approaches to digest new information.

By the end of the first class of Education 515 I had already realized that this course will be a bit of an eye opener for me. I already consider myself a “techie teacher,” however, this class will help me to create pedagogy for how I will increment technology in my teaching. I currently use technology to introduce lessons and teach students how to use technology for learning; however I haven’t truly developed a thought out philosophy on the purpose of using technology. In other words, I use it constantly without a true sense of direction in mind.
By the end of this class I hope to have a stronger argument for why I am using technology and how I can improve my ability to defend the importance of using technology to teach. Currently I am the only teacher in our small district that has the additional positions of Technology Lead and Data Manager. I am being paid to help teachers at my school site use technology and data (from computer databases and curriculum) in their classrooms. I hope to establish myself as the permanent person in this position for not just my school, but the entire district.
I believe that our culture has become one of information and instant gratification so implications for education is that a) as teachers we need to prepare our students to use technology and b) we need to use technology to keep up with the rate at which our students are capable of learning.
Technology is a very useful tool in education. State testing, RTi, and larger class sizes make it very important that teachers know their students education needs at all times. Technology makes that data readily available. Everything from interventions to CST results can be accessed and analyzed on computers thus making direct and explicit teaching possible. Furthermore, having access to online discussions through wiki’s and blogs makes getting to know students more convenient. Classroom time can be spent teaching while blogs and Wiki’s can be a place to become more familiar.
Through the discourse of this class I hope to gain new insights into the purpose of technology in the schools.

Some of my personal and professional goals for this class are to familiarize myself with new technologies and learning how to integrate them into my lessons, by means of modify my lessons and incorporating new technological advances. I am hoping to have a better understanding as to how to maintain a blog and or wiki to enhance my lessons and my students’ learning.
I believe, as educators, we are preparing our students to be active participants in our society. As technology is a huge factor in our society, we must teach according to the demands of our world and incorporate these new advancements within our curricula.

My personal goal for EDU 515 is to become more comfortable with the use of technology in general. I have a very basic understanding and comfort level when it comes to software, videos, blogging, etc. I want to use technology with ease and greater understanding.

Professionally I want to change career paths and EDU 515 I am hoping will help me become a cutting edge teacher. I want my future students to be excited by my lesson plans because I have found ways to tap into their worlds, into their interests making history, government or economics more relevant to them.

Technology is the present and the future, students aren’t the least bit intimidated by it and I don’t want to be either.

Where do I begin with my goals in this class. I feel like I have so many. I have been very excited to start this program because I truly believe that technology is such an important part of teaching students and unfortunately I am not very technology savvy. So my first goal in this class is to get used to using my computer and not be afraid of learning to use new methods of technology that I haven’t used before.
At our first class meeting we created our own wiki and blog accounts. This will be my next goal, to master and use them at some point this year within a classroom. By the end of this class I would love to have a wiki up and running within my class and have my Special Ed. students doing more than just worksheets. Since being a Special Education teacher is all about differentiated instruction I think using computer programs will come in very handy. Students can not only get direct instruction from the teacher in the classroom, but they can also learn to use the computer in an academic way. Many of my students love to use the computer, but it is hard for them so having that time in the Special Education room will be a great resource for our students.
Using technology within the classroom is going to make a big difference in the learning process of our students. I think students will be more willing to learn and actually excited to use the abilities they have acquired on their own with technology. Since so many students already use the computer at home, they will be able to better that ability and become stronger learners. I am looking forward to helping students learn in a more effective environment.

I hope this course will help me gain a more thorough understanding of how to implement technology in my future classroom. I'd like to use the knowledge base in this area to create efficient and interactive unit, lesson, and activity plans that will engage my students and allow to participate in active learning.
