"Teacher, Teach Thyself!"

Ready for another semester of academic and professional growth....
GOALS:
Here we are at the beginning of a new semester, and as always it is a fresh start and a new opportunity to learn and grow both as a professional and human being.
So let's address a few basic questions: What are some of your personal or professional goals in EDUC 522 this semester. What would you like to be able to accomplish at the end of this class that you could not do at the beginning? What technologies might you be able to utilize to better reach all learners and learning preferences? What unit(s) might you want to work with in this class? What do you think?
Take a few minutes here as we begin to gather your thoughts and to brainstorm on a plan for progress in this class. Your final posted blogsite entry should be at least three of four paragraphs.

Goals for this class and otherwise:
My goals for this quarter are to grow as a teacher and to not only create a unit for my students, but also create a unit that will impress my principal and colleagues. I work with colleagues that are willing to share ideas and that are interested in helping me grow as a teacher, so for a change I would like to offer an idea of my own. I have to admit that working full time and earning a master’s degree at the same time are not an easy task to balance, which at times doesn’t bring out the best teacher in me. Teachers have the responsibility of not only being aware of all the contributing factors that help learning happen in every child, but also must know how to measure and make sure that every child is learning. I mention the previous not to nag, but only because I truly care and think about whether I am providing the best education for my students. As teachers we cannot control which students are in our class and not every child learns the same way. Therefore, we have the challenge of meeting the needs of all students; we all know that we begin by providing a safe, fair, and equal opportunity for all types of learners. The true challenge is how we go about accomplishing that goal, from classroom management, organization, lesson planning, to teaching methods and strategies.
As a new teacher I have quickly learned that what may work for one class wont necessarily work for the next. Therefore, I keep trying until I find what works for that next class. It is all about meeting the needs of my students and all the while I develop tricks and tools in my “teaching bag”. This quarter I will be given the opportunity to add to my “teaching bag”; we will be learning how to incorporate technology into a standard based lesson that targets as many as the multiple intelligences as possible. A lot of time and effort will be placed on creating a multiple intelligence unit, so it will be a great accomplishment to be able to use it as one more tool in helping students be successful life long learners that they can possibly be. I know that only with time and experience I will be able to have a better grasp of how to handle all the responsibilities of being a teacher without it being so over whelming. I plan on passing on what I learned from this masters program and from my veteran colleagues to fellow/future new teachers.

My Goals in EDUC 522
I am fortunate enough to love the subject matter that I will be teaching, that is physical education. In physical education class we naturally teach to the bodily-kinesthetic learner. In EDUC 522 class I hope to learn how to incorporate the other 7 multiple intelligences into my teaching style. I have noticed that so many of my students in physical education class are not naturally gifted in the bodily-kinesthetic intelligence so it is even more important that I learn to involve the other intelligences. It is often difficult to incorporate some of the other intelligences due to a lack of funds, lack of support, and lack of importance that physical education class has in a high school setting, but that will not sway me from trying to incorporate them.
Another goal that I have for this class is to become a better lesson planner and unit planner. I know that this will become an easier task with more practice but I also know that lesson and unit planning takes a lot of time, something we all struggle to have enough of. One of the biggest struggles that I have with lesson and unit planning is having ample equipment and supplies for the amount of students I have in a class and the correct facilities (i.e. classroom location we can take notes in or view a PowerPoint or video in). Sometimes a lesson doesn’t work out the way we thought or hoped it would and so we need to adapt or change our plans right in the middle of the lesson. For this reason I would like to develop some mini lessons that can be used “in case of emergency” or when I suddenly have more time on my hands than I expected (i.e. the lesson went quicker than I thought). I have learned so much from the teachers that I have observed and taught for but I want to go beyond that and bring a refreshing new appeal to physical education class. I want physical education class to be viewed not only as a required class but also as an important and desired class in high school.

Goals for EDUC 522
I am excited to begin another semester in the Digital Teaching program. The abundance of information that I acquired last semester brought new meaning to my teaching style. I know after completion of this program I will be one step closer in becoming an exceptional teacher. Personally, I will be learning about technology throughout the entire semester. I don’t have any set goals, but am anxious to see what I will learn to expand my knowledge about technology and teaching.
My main goal for this class includes exploring the theory of multiple intelligences and learning how to differentiate instruction using this approach. Throughout the semester I plan on taking my first steps into the classroom and become a sub. As I embark on my journey as a sub, I look forward to applying the MI theory in an actual classroom. I hope that this semester will challenge my original beliefs and provide me with better classroom management and organization strategies to create a learning environment for all types of learners.
Another goal that I have for this class is to learn about the importance of teaching using the MI theory specific in a Kindergarten setting. In order to achieve this goal I will be developing a lesson plan and unit addressing multiple intelligences. My goals for this course are to understand my student’s abilities and teach to encourage their learning. I hope that this course will help me investigate appropriate integrations of technology to address multiple intelligences. I am anxious to incorporate the use of a wiki or blog in a lesson. I wish I would be able to try the lesson with an actual classroom, but I won’t be able to. However, this semester will hopefully provide me with insight and strategy that will help me differentiate my teaching style for future use in the classroom.

I am really looking forward to this quarter and the two classes I am taking. The video editing class will be a big challenge for me but I am so excited to learn the programs and be able to incorporate some creativity into my projects. For this class specifically, I have always been really interested in multiple intelligences, even though I did not realize there was a title to that subject. I have always felt, personally, that I am intelligent but not necessarily in the classic ways students are categorized. Growing up I also noticed how my circle of friends, no matter how well we got along, were all so different in how they did in school and how they approached the various subjects we were learning.
From this class, I hope to walk away with a better understanding of multiple intelligences and different ways to reach the multiple intelligences of my students. My students are so different from each other, and I know no matter what classes I teach in the future, this will always be the case. The other major thing I hope to get out of this class, is how to reach all of these multiple intelligences with the limit resources available to me. This is something I have been struggling since I started teaching in January. I pretty much, have nothing available to me currently and that makes differentiating my instruction with technology virtually impossible.
Other than finding away to reach my students, I do not really have any expectations for this class, other than to expand my knowledge on this subject. I am enjoying all the different technologies taught in this program, but I am really glad to have a chance to learn about how to reach the different types of students using different technologies.

I am going to focus on lesson planning during the next nine weeks. I am struggling to create lessons in which I am not preaching from the mount instead of inspiring student learning. I am excited to explore lesson planning from the multiple intelligence point of view and to learn how to integrate technology into these types of lessons.
I am experienceing a lot of stress that comes with going to school full time on top of working full time so I will also be trying to concentrate on being incredibly efficent with my time in order to get the best out of my time here at Azusa.
Within the multiple intelligence framework I hope to explore new technology and software that can enhance students interest and knowledge as they explore math with me. I am in a position where my use of technology with the students is incredibly limited, but I look forward to finding creative ways to sneak it in during my current assignment.
More importantly I aim at creating a tool chest that I can access in my future in education that will make me marketable and the best the teacher that I possibly can be.

My personal goal this semester is to learn the basics about sewing clothing. I started sewing by hand since I was twelve years old. Then one of my uncles bought me a sewing machine that I hardly ever used. It’s been 16 years since I got that sewing machine and it still works. Therefore, I will still be able to use my sewing machine to practice and improve my sewing skills while I’m taking a sewing class.
By the end of this class I want to be able to remember all the things we did in this class and in my other class. That way I could use them in further projects for school and outside of school.
The technology that I could use to better reach all learners and learning preferences is power point. Through power point I would be able to reach more students that are visual-spatial, verbal-linguistic and musical learners.
The unit that I might want to work with in this class is making a lesson plan with the three R’s since they are used in elementary, junior high and probably even High School.
