The Fieldwork Interview in Preparation

DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

Before you even show up to your interview with a school administer, be sure and do your homework. In particular, make sure and research the numbers with respect to the school you will visit. What "numbers"?

Well, there is the API score, the ethnicity and socioeconomic status of the students. There is the number of students on free and reduced lunch programs, and the languages spoken at home. What is the average years of experience of the teachers, and how many are in their first year of teaching? What is the class size average? You can see all these scores at greatschools.net. The “numbers” do not tell you everything about a school by a long shot; on the other hand, the numbers don’t lie.

Secondly, decide here on this blogsite entry exactly where it is you want this interview to go. Why did you choose this school? What is it that interests you? In the very first part of your interview, you may want to explain that

1.) you are a La Verne University students who is conducting this interview on behalf of a requirement in a class on educational philosophy dealing with ethical and political issues schools face today;
2.) and why you chose to visit this administrator’s particular school.

Once this administrator knows where you are coming from, it should allow them to understand what is going on and to help get you the information you need.

So, to sum it up, in this blogsite posting please post some of the raw data about the school you chose; and then explain in four or five sentences why it is you chose that school. Besides satisfying this week’s homework requirement, you will be only that much closer to being ready to sit down for your interview with the school administrator.

One reason I chose this school is because my uncle is a teacher there. I have also heard great things about Mr. Bob Watson, who is the Assistant Principal. I’ve heard that he is a nice guy. I am also interested in this school because it is a continuation school and I want to keep my options open.

The school I picked was Monte Vista. The reason why I picked this school is because I think I want to teach middle school Math. Another reason is that my son attends there and my older son went there two years ago.

I was impressed with my finding. I have always thought Monte Vista was a good school and now I know exactly how everything is broken up. This was a great website about schools. I am having a fun time researching different schools ans to find the best fit for myself.

I chose this school because I heard from a friend that this school was very good. I also made an appointment to interview the principal of this school. The people I spoke to were very friendly and accommodating. This whole process is very exciting and interesting!

Glen City Elementary School is located in the city of Santa Paula. The population of the city is approximately 30,000 people. The school is located in a low-to-middle income area and is primarily composed of Hispanic students. The instruction offered is from kindergarten through the 5th grade. Thirty teachers are employed to instruct approximately six hundred students.

I did not attend Glen City, but I did attend other schools within the same district. As I was growing up, I did not pay attention to the problems affecting education. I want to learn more about the current state of education in the area where I was raised. My younger sister teaches at this school and I would like to know more about her place of employment.

The reason I chose this school is because I observed a class there last week, and I really adored it. I enjoyed working the children, and the faculty was incredibly helpful. I plan to start volunteering there on a weekly basis, starting Monday the 12th. The children are incredibly under-privileged, and an absolute joy to interact with.

I decided to interview Val White at De Anza Middle Schoo. I choose this school because it is a title 1 school and they are trying to change their scores before the state comes in and takes over the school. I am curious what the school is doing to make a difference. I work there, but because I am not working for the district I don't know much about the school or it's staff and I think it is time that I learn more about it.

The reason I chose this school is because I attended this school, and now my niece and nephew are attending the school. I wanted to see where their education levels stand. It is very important to see what the school district is doing to make changes and improve.
I am not sure if I want to teach here, but it is still important for me to familiarize myself with this kind information, for when I do become a teacher I will know where I would want to work.

I chose Lincoln School in Ventura, because I have passed it many times on my way to work and it is a smaller school with a very warm feel and charm. It looked very inviting.

I will be interviewing the Principal, Suzanne Guthrie on Tuesday, February 14th at
8:00 a.m.

What I found most intriguing while doing preliminary research prior to my visit, is that they employ a program that is known as Character Traits. It teaches kids a core set of ethical values that can be applied at both school and home. The teacher introduces a trait into their lesson plan and discuss the meaning of that trait and encourage the students to practice that behavior.

When I arrived on campus I had a strong feeling that this was a little community. It felt very safe and secure. I am not a proponent of large, multi-building campuses, especially at the elementary level.
