Welcome to Digital Video for the Classroom!

Students in this class will learn basic video editing and moviemaking tips from the planning through the shooting and editing stages. Students will learn basic concepts of film and storytelling, in addition to the hardware of digital video and storage devices. Students will use video editing software to create videos that will enhance their teaching and increase student learning in their classes. Students will create a short class video, and then they will plan, shoot, edit, and showcase a professional video for the classroom.

Students will not only learn how to create videos but will focus intensely on how video best can be used so that instructors teaches more effectively and students learn more than otherwise. Students will examine closely the strengths and weaknesses of film, so as to plan curriculum that best takes advantage of the power of video to help students understand content material. A constant question will always be, "How does a multimedia presentation of this concept get the job done better than some more 'traditional' methodology?"

Students will learn the theory of film and film planning and production, as well as the technical concerns regarding digital media. However, considerable time in this course will be devoted to actually editing film during class time, with students and instructor nearby able to provide direct assistance, constructive criticism, and positive feedback. A focus of this class will be the creative process and the collaborative nature of a learning community wherein a final product moves along various drafts towards a "final cut."

Students will learn how to distribute their videos in a variety of formats, including over the World Wide Web and by DVD. Students will not only learn the fundamentals of how to plan, shoot, and edit digital video but will learn where and when they might use it to further student achievement in their classes and enhance their professional lives.
